VERSATILE VOLUME RUG BY TIJMEN SMEULDERS

A 3D rug, made by dutch designer Tijmen Smeulders. Tijmen about the project: “I searched for a logic that brings together all the elements of which a rug exists. Color, shape, material, density and pile height are re-connected with each other in order of strengthening each presence. By making use of a color gradient, a transition from long to short poles and an unusual oval shape, the rug has become a three-dimensional object that defines its own space. You can feel and see the rug is changing from the inside out”.

TEXTILES BY FEMKE VAN GEMERT

Femke van Gemert  re-uses textiles in abstract works by focussing on a single colour. All her creations reveal the beauty of imperfection and deterioration over time. Her compositions radiate a mood laden with traces of the textiles used. The work Femke creates is always very tangible and evokes emotions by the way material and colour is shown. For her commissioned work clients can donate discarded textiles, enhancing their attachment with the resulting artwork. After a long career in the fashion industry she decided to start creating using only recycled and leftover fabric and textile produced by our increasingly consumerist society. In this way she is re-evaluating the meaning of waste in the design process.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY JEAN LUC TRUIJENS

“The work of Jean-Luc Truijens (1968) is a study of color, form and abstraction. His IT background and need for order and structure leads to an inventory of combinations of color and form. Jean-Luc sees the naked human body as the ultimate form of beauty. He uses the body as a canvas for the projections of his color-shape matrix and other geometric experiments. The combination of abstract geometric shapes, rich saturated colors and the organic body produces new and unexpected shapes.” He graduated at the Amsterdam Fotoacademie (photo academy) May 2014. After that his work was selected for the book ‘New Photo Dutch Photography talent 2015″. He also won bronze at the renowned SO2014 photo contest.

BETWEEN TWO RIVERS BY SIBA SAHABI

Siba Sahabi’s work aims to show how one culture can influence another, leading to renewal and cultural richness. Between Two Rivers is the ancient Greek translation of the term Mesopotamia, the birthplace of the pottery turntable. The turntable, aided potters to design circular objects more accurately and faster. In Greece sparked a new style of ceramics called Minyan pottery which Siba has reinterpreted in her felt sculptures. A circular, ribbed finish is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Minyan ware which reflects its production process on a potter’s turntable.

The objects from the collection, that comprise a series of carafes are made from coiled coloured felt strips coated with a layer of paint on both sides. The dense felt material beautifully translates the heavy appearance of the Minyan ware and exaggerates the appearance of the oversized objects, some of which are up to 50cm high.

FRESNEL LIGHTS BY DIRK VANDER KOOIJ

This hanging lamp of designer Dirk vander Kooij looks like a brilliant gold colored celestial body, but it’s a lamp made out of recycled synthetics and metal. The form is derived from the Fresnel lens – a special lens that concentrates light into a relatively narrow beam which is used in for instance lighthouses, searchlights and navigation lights. The shape causes the light out of the 360 led lights to be sent up and down. The layered structure diffuses the warm light so it’s not unpleasant to look into the lamp.Furthermore, the lamp is hung up on a cup-and-ball joint so one can aim it accurately.

GRID PLANK BY DAPHNA LAURENS

The shapes of all four ‘cut and serve’ Grid Planks originate from Daphna Laurens’ grid studies, one of many methods for the design studio to devise form and shape. Varying in size and grid, all planks are designed to be clear-cut functional and aesthetically alluring, without adding unneeded materials or ‘handy’ accessories. “Cut on the smooth, serve on the grid side”. Use the plank like this and it will persist in being neat and tidy for a very long time. Oiling the beech wooden plank once in a while, using grape seed or alternative thin non-smelling oil extends its durable use. A ‘how to treat’ specification comes with every Grid Plank.
